The big problem she faces appears to be that she just doesn't feel that Lovin' Feelin' quite enough when she's with her husband to be. Money, success, health (and 23 year-old looks, apparently) and a worthy partner who loves her. In the present, Becca has no material needs, she's got a good job she's worked her way up the ranks of. What need for a second chance did Becca even have? Where "Being Erica" begins with the main character waking up in a hospital ward after having hit rock bottom, Becca. What purpose is there in magically giving a second chance to this character? And come to think of it. Where "Being Erica" focused on improving one's life through personal, guided introspection and experimentation, (based on a blend of therapeutic behavioral psychology and various enlightened philosophies), this show appears to have no point whatsoever. There are a precious few flashes of maturity spotted here and there, but they feel shallow and deliberately inserted because, "She'd know stuff, right?" Petty, spoiled American Princess 23 year-olds, to be clear. She is in fact not at all out of place in the world of 23 year-olds. She still acts like an impulsive child-woman.
My main gripe: The main character, Becca, is mentally in her early 40's but has little to show for that much living. Either deliberately because "Hindsight" is targeting idiots, or through sheer foolishness because whoever is in charge simply doesn't get it. Everything from the coffee-getter publishing job, the overbearing gayish boss, the irresponsible drinking buddy girlfriend, the troubled but beloved brother, the mysterious time doctor type., and yet, it was the pointless surface patterns which were borrowed by the producers here, while all of the insight and cleverness of "Being Erica" has been binned. Anybody familiar with the former will immediately notice all the similarities and character archetypes. If it goes long, you will be dedicating several years of your life to increasing the net stupidity of American culture.Ĭlearly, the Canadian show "Being Erica" upon which "Hindsight" was modeled, was carefully watched by the executives. I know there are jobs at stake in TV production land, but if you're involved with this project, you're making narcissistic brain candy and should perhaps take a moment to consider seeking more fulfilling employment.īecause while I love time travel stories, this one is tailor-made for nitwits. This is a well-produced piece of shiny nonsense. Still, just looking at the series’ potential in the initial episodes, it’s an obvious backdrop both for light-hearted soap opera and nostalgic comedy - about everything from AOL to smoking in bars - two qualities that dovetail pretty neatly with the niche that VH1 courts on a regular basis.Īdd those breezy qualities to the show’s central relationship between Becca and Lolly, and the good choice of Donna Murphy and Brian Kerwin as Becca’s parents, and any number of cable networks might find themselves looking back on “Hindsight” wishing they had the foresight to develop it.Becca, as she nears 40, is about to embark on her second wedding to Andy Kelly, but her joy is tempered by the absence of her old best friend Lolly who's a no-show, having dropped out of their relationship years ago.ĭuration: 3 Discs HD DVD-9 Plastic Bag Packing Ver. Other than the styles of the era, scant effort has been made to reflect the passage of two decades on the characters, which is a quibble, perhaps, but a trifle disorienting at first. Of course, making it all about one woman’s journey keeps the field of vision rather narrow, and the pilot (directed by Michael Trim) doesn’t provide quite enough depth to fully appreciate the gravity of what changing Becca’s past might mean.

Series creator Emily Fox has some of the expected fun with Becca’s knowledge of the future, telling Lolly that a nerdy guy “got cute - the same thing happened to Patrick Dempsey.” Plus, there are amusing throwaways, like the O.J. So will she again go through with her wedding to the sexy Sean (Craig Horner), which turned out to be a disaster, and repair her friendship with bosom buddy Lolly (Sarah Goldberg), with whom she had a falling out that the older version of her still regrets? Having fainted, Becca awakens in 1995, on the eve of her first marriage.
One inexplicable elevator ride later, and she has the chance to do exactly that.
